“He suddenly came upon a peach grove which extended along the bank for about a hundred yards. He noticed with surprise that the grove had a magic effect,so singularly free from the usual mingling of brushwood, while the beautifully grassy ground was covered with its rose petals...” In a classroom at Guizhou Minzu University, LAOONG MISS PATCHARAMON, an international student from Thailand, is reciting The Peach Blossom Spring.
Her pronunciation is clear and expressive. It was the first piece of classical Chinese prose she ever studied, and it has since become her favorite.
She says that her years of studying in Guizhou are her own “Peach Blossom Spring.”

LAOONG’s connection with the Chinese language began early. Her aunt taught her the basics, but it was Chinese historical dramas that truly sparked her passion. In high school, she binge-watched more than thirty series, developing a deep fascination with Chinese history and culture. From then on, she began teaching herself Chinese, dreaming of one day studying in China.
In 2023, LAOONG crossed mountains and seas to arrive in Guizhou. Her reasons were practical: a cool climate and close distance.

But once she arrived, she discovered much more. “Before coming, I thought Chinese people might seem a bit distant,” she said. “But the people here are surprisingly warm and welcoming.”
At first, LAOONG could not understand the local dialect. When a street-food vendor noticed, she immediately slowed down and switched to a Guizhou-style Mandarin, patiently continuing the conversation. The kindness from strangers brought warmth to her life abroad. Today, she can understand parts of the dialect and has fallen in love with local specialties such as rice noodles with lamb and fried potatoes. Even fish mint, known for its distinctive aroma, has won her over.

Her major courses, however, proved to be the real challenge. “In my first semester, I couldn’t understand Modern Chinese at all. The pressure was huge,” she recalled. Her approach may have been simple, but it worked: memorizing vocabulary every single day. She pushed herself through the 5,000 words required for HSK Level 6, actively made Chinese friends, and practiced speaking boldly to refine her oral skills.
Learning did not stop at the classroom door. In October 2025,encouraged by her teachers, LAOONG teamed up with classmates from different countries to take part in an innovation and entrepreneurship competition. The project idea came from a trip.
During the National Day holiday, she visited Anshun, where she was deeply impressed by the exquisite batik of Buyi ethnic group she encountered. She decided to focus on this “living culture”.

The team conducted in-depth research on the colors, patterns, and cultural meanings of Buyi clothing, planning to promote the beauty of these crafts to young people in Southeast Asia through short videos and international social media platforms.
In the end, the project, centered on the digital dissemination of intangible cultural heritage, won second prize at the provincial competition. The experience deepened her love for Guizhou’s rich ethnic cultures. “Buyi batik, Miao silver ornaments, Shui horse - tail embroidery... Here, culture isn’t locked away in museums. It’s ‘alive’ in everyday life, full of charm.”

From a culture enthusiast to a student drawn by landscapes and a cultural communicator, her goal has always been clear: to continue her studies in Chinese and become a language teacher or translator in the future.
“If you want to experience a place with culture, nature, and warmth, come to Guizhou,” she said. “The climate is pleasant, the people are kind, the cost of living is low, and the ethnic cultures are rich and unique. You’ll see a different side of China.”
Looking ahead, she hopes to become a bridge, using language education and cultural exchange to connect the two countries and deepen mutual understanding and friendship.
